By Year 1 the student should understand how to verbally create a sentence, understanding that a sentence is one idea. It starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop. A good way to get the children to construct a sentence is to use the “Thinking Hats”. You ask them a question about a story they have read. They answer the story in a complete sentence, and then they write the sentence with your help. For example, Question: “How many little pigs were there in the story?” Answer: “There were three.” or, Question: “Who were the little pigs afraid of?” Answer: “They were afraid of the Big Bad Wolf.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Retelling stories is another good way to encourage sentence formation. After reading a story, draw 4 -6 blank boxes. Ask, “What happened first in the story? The student answers and you help them write the sentence in the first box. Continue…”What happened next? What else happened? What happened last? Once the sentences are written in the boxes the student can provide the illustrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for the Foundation Year, students can draw a picture of their choice and make up a sentence to tell you what their picture is about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Colour each hat the appropriate colour. Stick to cardboard or laminate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sight Words<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following on from the Foundation year, continue teaching and revising the Dolch Sight Words, using a variety of activities. Make flashcards and use them to play games such as “Concentration” and “Throw the word”. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the end of the Year 1 school year, a student will probably reach around Level 12. However each child is different, and students progress at different rates. What is important is that the student reaches their potential, and has plenty of exposure to literature at their own reading level.
