Leveled Reading

By the end of the Year 6 school year, a student will probably be reading at Level 30, the highest level. However each child is different, and students progress at different rates. What is important is that the student reaches their potential, and has plenty of exposure to literature at their own reading level. See the Beacon Media Primary Literacy page for a range of Leveled stories. Also use the following biographies for reading practice, as well as excellent selected chapter books.

Assessment

Mathematics Assessment: There are 3 mathematics tests to be completed over the year. These are found in the “Maths Cards”, the test being card 14 of each level. Keep a record of your child’s results.

Spelling Assessment: Run regular spelling tests. Test 10 words per week from the phonetic group you are teaching.

Reading Assessment: For students not yet reading at Level 30, Learn how to use the “Running Records” testing system provided on the Beacon Media Primary Literacy page.

Writing Assessment: Make a folder of your child’s writing samples, in chronological order, so that you can see their progress.
